God is My Rest and My Refuge

>> Thursday, September 24, 2009

I discovered a beautiful post written by Jean Wise on her blog Healthy Spirituality. She invites us to join her once a week for lectio divina as she shares her own meditation and reflection. The scripture verse this week was from Psalm 62:
My soul, be at rest in God alone, from whom comes my hope. God alone is my rock and my salvation; my secure height, I shall not fall. My safety and glory are with God, my strong rock and refuge. Trust God at all times, my people! Pour out your hearts to God our refuge! (Psalm 62:6-9 NAB)
The words rest & refuge were the words given to me in prayer. These two words stayed with me all this week. I woke up thinking about them. I went to bed thinking about them. And when I had a moment of silence, I prayed with them. And I thanked God for them.
Rest. God knows I need rest. Not just physical rest, though I need that, too. But emotional rest. I have been going, going, going, since writing my book. Up and down emotionally. And I have very little free time. What I most want to do is to write about God and to pray and to read. That is one of the reasons I started my Simple Reflections blog - to be able to ponder the Word of God and to reflect on it and share it. I have enjoyed it. It brings me peace.
Which is a form of rest, is it not? O Lord, what do you want me to do? Help me find rest. Perhaps I will find rest in You.
Refuge. I have been looking for refuge all of my life. From a very young age, as an incest survivor, I have needed to find safe places. I have needed to find refuge.
But I have discovered that true Refuge is not a place. It is a Person. It is with God.
It is knowing I am loved by God with an everlasting love. It is knowing I am being held by God, even as I rest within Him, within his Heart.
Help me to trust You Lord, help me to rest in You alone.
My God, my Rest and my Refuge.

Colleen,
Thank you for sharing this. I love the psalms and this one is one I return to often. It is so easy for me to get caught up in everyday life and forget that in my stress and craziness I need to seek my refuge in the only One who can give it. (because the world sure doesn't!)
I always enjoy your blogs- I know I will always find a bit of God's refuge and rest here.
Hugs & Blessings!

Beautiful thoughts, Colleen!
Rest, what rest? I'm always going and doing; working, shopping, cooking, etc. I look forward to my "requiescant in pace" (if I make it) on a fluffy cloud up in heaven;
Refuge, I place myself in my Mothers arms who is Our Lady of Refuge! She takes care of me and hides me under her Mantle, feeds me with the milk of the Holy Spirit (grace) and guides me to her Eucharistic Son. Oh, how safe I feel in her arms; who can harm me? She will crush the head of the serpent! Thank you Jesus! Thank you Mother Mary!

I love the picture, Colleen. Such beautiful muted colors give the idea of rest even before we read. Thanks for sharing.

Kay, I knew that picture was the right one the minute I saw it for the same reason. So peaceful. God bless.
