A few days at the beach can do wonders for one's outlook on life. Especially when you get a weird but beautiful cloud formation like this and a sunset that is just plain gorgeous!

Humility Makes Us Real
For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted. -Luke 14:11
- It is hard to talk about humility. What does it mean to be humble? Here are some of my thoughts.
- The most humble people I have ever met were people who did not know they were humble. They just lived it.
- Humble people acknowledge their talents, accept others' compliments with grace and give God the thanks and the glory.
- Humble people know who they are and cooperate with the graces given to them by the Lord.
- Humble people know all things come from God.
- Humble people do not put themselves down, they raise others up.
- Having low self esteem for much of my life, I never knew how to take a compliment. It has taken me a long time to understand that humility is not about putting ourselves down. It is about self-understanding.
- I like this quote -
“Pride makes us artificial and humility makes us real” - Thomas Merton
So true.
If we are truly humble, then we are real. We see ourselves for who we are, accept ourselves as we are and accept others as they are as well. There is no need to compare ourselves to other people for we see that it no longer matters.
Because the good news is - we are all invited to the banquet.

Praying the Psalms
Praying the Psalms - Psalm 33
I just love the Psalms. And I love joining Jenny at Just A Minute in Praying the Psalms every Saturday. Won't you join us? This week is Psalm 33.
And that is where it is at for me these days, no matter what happens - holding onto the Lord with hope and praise.
Lord, help me to trust and hope and love you more and more each day.
Amen.
For in God our hearts rejoice; in your holy name we trust. This psalm is a beautiful psalm of praise and it ends with these two verses. What a beautiful prayer, rejoicing in God and then a blessing - asking for God's kindness and stating we have put all our hope in Him.
May your kindness, LORD, be upon us; we have put our hope in you. - Psalm 33:21-22
And that is where it is at for me these days, no matter what happens - holding onto the Lord with hope and praise.
Lord, help me to trust and hope and love you more and more each day.
Amen.
Sabbath Moments - Just Be
Sabbath moments are the moments we rest in God, when we take time to just Be with God rather than Do. Sabbath moments are those times when we live in the moment and find the holy in the ordinary. I invite you to share your Sabbath moment(s) here on Saturdays. Be sure to sign into Mr. Linky below. If you don't have a blog, please share about it in a comment!
Sabbath moments were easy to come by this week. I have been on vacation for the past two weeks. The first week was spent traveling and sightseeing. This second week was all about resting and relaxing.
I spent time praying and meditating. I spent a day or two in my pajamas doing nothing. I read some books, paid a visit to my favorite bookstore, and even went to a movie. I cannot remember the last time I actually went to a movie theater!
I just spent my time doing nothing. Nothing at least in the eyes of the world.
But while I was doing "nothing," I was hanging out with my hubby. And hanging out with the Lord.
I spent my time just BEING, instead of DOING.
Thank you, Lord! I needed that!

God Sends Angels
Someone once told me that he did not think that God was involved in the minor details of our lives. I disagreed. I have experienced His loving presence in my everyday life too many times.
Last week was one of those times.
Hubby and I were on our way home from vacation. We had a good 4 or 5 hour drive ahead of us when suddenly one of our tires blew and we had to pull over to the side of the highway.
We decided to call AAA but just when I was about to dial the number, a truck pulled over and a man got out, offering to help. He proceeded to change the tire for us so we wouldn't be stuck there waiting. He waved off our offer of payment and was soon on his way. I told Rich he was one of God's angels!
So we got off at the next exit to put some air in the spare and check the other tires. We had to wait in line behind some young men filling the tires on their all-terrain vehicles. We didn't get impatient about it, just relieved that we would soon be on our way again.
When they were done with their tires, they pulled their truck away from the air hose and motioned for us to pull forward. Then, instead of being on their way, they proceeded to check the air in all our tires and put air in those that needed it!
We were so grateful for their kind help and glad that we did not get impatient! After all, why be impatient or worried? God kept sending us angels!
So what do you think? Does God do details?

Thankful for Blessings - Vacation
Every Wednesday I join a special friend, Judy, in a meme that she hosts at her wonderful blog, A Thankful Woman's Book of Blessings. In this meme we give thanks for the things we are most thankful for this past week and then link to Judy's blog. Participating in this meme helps me to be more aware of my blessings. Thank you, Judy!
Here are some of my blessings from this week:
1. Thank you, Lord, for the freedom we have in this country. We went away last week, saw Charleston, SC for the first time. Beautiful city. So much history. Went to Fort Sumter where the first battle of the Civil War took place. Reminded me of the many sacrifices made for our country and for freedom.
2. Thank you, Lord, for our vacation. Besides going to Charleston, we went to the beach for a couple of days. Beautiful and peaceful and just what I needed.
3. Thank you, Lord, for all the rain we have been getting, which even followed us out of town! Didn't stop us from having fun and seeing the sights!
4. Thank you, Lord, for my family and friends. They fill my life with love and joy.
5. Thank you, Lord, for Your unconditional Love. I love you. Amen.

The Narrow Gate
"Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I tell you, will attempt to enter but will not be strong enough - Luke 13:24
At first glance, this gospel reading seems to be talking about earning our way into heaven. But that is not my understanding of salvation.
Salvation comes from God, not from our own efforts. Salvation is a grace. A free gift. It is not about pulling ourselves up by our own bootstraps.
So then what does this "striving" mean?
I think striving has more to do with our struggles to surrender to God...to love God and our neighbor...to make Jesus Christ the Lord of our everyday lives.
I think striving to enter the narrow gate is about being on this spiritual journey and joining with others in these struggles. It is not about winning any kind of contest or earning our way into heaven or being better than the next guy in the religion department.
It is about trying to love as God loves and then realizing we just cannot do it without Him.
In The Story of a Soul, St Therese writes about being too small to climb the rough stairway to heaven on her own. She realizes that she needs to surrender to Jesus whose arms will be the elevator that lifts her up.
John Shea writes ( The Spiritual Wisdom of the Gospels for Christian Preachers and Teachers for Year C) – “… what begins in striving is accomplished in surrender ... divine love makes brothers and sisters of us all. When we know this, then God knows us and he opens wide the gate."
Oh Lord, please help me to remember that I cannot accomplish anything on my own. Help me in my struggles to love and to surrender all to you.
Amen.

Praying the Psalms - Psalm 32
I just love the Psalms. And I love joining Jenny at Just A Minute in Praying the Psalms every Saturday. Won't you join us? This week is Psalm 32.
It has taken me a lifetime to realize that God's mercy endures forever and ever. It has taken me a lifetime to realize that God's love for me is not based on what I do or do not do.
I need not be afraid when I go to confession. I need not be afraid to tell God my sins and to ask for His mercy.
I can never lose His Love.
No matter what.
Happy the sinner whose fault is removed, whose sin is forgiven. - Psalm 32-1I have experienced this forgiveness. I have felt this happiness when I have gone to confession.
It has taken me a lifetime to realize that God's mercy endures forever and ever. It has taken me a lifetime to realize that God's love for me is not based on what I do or do not do.

Some of my Sabbath moments this week:
1. I took some time everyday to read some scripture - the readings of the day AND Sunday's readings so I can reflect on them before Sunday. Normally this is something I do when I have the time. This week I made the time. I made it a priority.
2. We spent a couple of days at the beach and I enjoyed a lot of time sitting on the beach or on the balcony just contemplating God's beautiful creation. Watching the seagulls, listening to the waves, hearing the children laughing and playing in the sand. This was a time of play and rest - no work, no running around - no schedules!

Assumption
“My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord.”
Those words from Mary in her Magnificat just touch my heart. I have sung those words myself. I have shouted to the mountaintops the glory of God. He has done such wondrous things in my life. And I just want to go and tell the whole world.
And God continues to do the Impossible.
Glory be to God.

Praying the Psalms - Psalm 31
I just love the Psalms. And I love joining Jenny at Just A Minute in Praying the Psalms every Saturday. Won't you join us? This week is Psalm 31.
I am forgotten, out of mind like the dead; I am like a shattered dish.I hear the whispers of the crowd; terrors are all around me. They conspire against me; they plot to take my life. But I trust in you, LORD; I say, "You are my God." - Psalm 31:13-15
- These verses amaze me. The psalmist feels like he is out of mind like the dead, like a shattered dish. And yet he says he trusts in the Lord. And then he ends this psalm with these words:
Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the LORD. (v.25)
- Hope is what makes it possible for the psalmist to say he trusted in the Lord.
- Hope is what makes it possible for me to say I trust in the Lord.
- I have been in that pit. I have felt like a shattered dish. But yet I hope. Not due to my own will. But as a gift from the Lord.
- Hope.
- And with that hope, I can say also - You are my God.

Some of my Sabbath moments this week:
1. Driving home in the rain. We had a tropical depression blow by us this week and it rained on and off all day. The cloud cover was weird looking - laying low and providing some kind of ceiling over the earth. I did not have an opportunity to pull over and take a picture. Darn. But it was nature in all its beauty and power.
2. I had an hour in Eucharistic Adoration. I have no words.
3. Took a little time a few evenings this week to just sit and ponder. And to be still. Total silence and peace. No agenda, just sitting with the Lord.
Did you have some Sabbath moments this week?

3. Thank you, God, for the gift of Laughter. I feel so grateful for those times when I can just laugh and laugh and enjoy that moment you have given me.
4. Thank you, God, for Our Lady. Thank you for the gift of your Mother. How much you must love us. How much you must love her.
5. Thank you, God, for the Love you have given to me. Love that I see through nature and family and friends and your Word and the Eucharist. And thank you for teaching me how to love you back.

Sometimes storms - both the inner kind and the weather kind - are powerful and terrifying. Sometimes they are beautiful.
Sometimes storms catch you off guard. Sometimes you know they are coming.
But always, they change things.
Anyone who says sunshine brings happiness has never danced in the rain. ~Author UnknownI saw this storm the other day and I got to thinking.

Much is Given
"Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more." (Luke 12:48)
Since becoming Catholic, I have felt so blessed. My conversion experience, the gifts that God has given to me ... all have been beautiful and surprising and even mind-boggling at times (for want of a better word.)
My life has changed in so many ways. And my relationship with God has grown in so many ways, I could never have predicted it. Not any of it.
And so I often think of the scripture verse above. I often think that I have been given so much, and because of that I know so much is demanded of me.
I am not talking so much about DOING here. I am talking more about BEING.
I am talking about counting our blessings and loving God back.
I am talking about being a child of God and treating others like they are, too.
Is it enough to tell others what we believe if we do not live it?
We are not perfect. We are all sinners. God knows that.
But still, am I not supposed to bring Christ to others? Am I not supposed to BE Christ for others?
If we have been given so much, should we not be spreading the Good News? Rather than judging others, should we not be bringing the light of Christ to all the dark places?
Recently someone reminded me of the story about Gandhi. He was Hindu but he loved and admired Jesus and quoted Him often. Yet he never became Christian. Seems he tried to go to a Christian church once and was turned away because of the color of his skin.
So he never became Christian because he thought so many of us Christians were so unlike Christ.
We are blessed to know Jesus. Should we not spread that blessing around? Not by condemning. Not by judging. But by Love.
Oh Lord, help me to be your light for others to see. Help me to love as you love. Amen.

Praying the Psalms - Psalm 30
I just love the Psalms. And I love joining Jenny at Just A Minute in Praying the Psalms every Saturday. Won't you join us? This week is Psalm 30.
- You changed my mourning into dancing; you took off my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness. With my whole being I sing endless praise to you. O LORD, my God, forever will I give you thanks. - Psalm 30:12-13
- I have been in mourning most of my life. When a child is sexually abused, there is unending grief. And there will probably always be grief for me, this side of heaven.
- But the Lord showed me love and light and healing. He showed me the possible and then he gave it to me. While I know that from time to time, I have to deal with the grief left over from my childhood, I am forever grateful for the dance and the song that God has given to me.
- Oh, Lord, you changed my mourning into dancing. I did not think it was possible. I did not think I could be pulled out of the pit, the darkness. But with you, nothing is impossible.
- And so I sing endless praise to you, Lord, with my whole being. Forever and ever. Amen.

Some of my Sabbath moments this week:
1. Last week I whined about not getting to see the sunset because I could not find a parking space. This week, my very loving husband suggested dinner at the beach (parking at the restaurant!) and then we took a walk on the beach and watched the sun set. It was a beautiful time with God, hubby and nature.
2. Had my infusion for RA yesterday. It was quiet 2 hours and gave me some quiet time.
3. Took time after dinner to sit and listen to some audio reflections and read scripture. Just hanging out with the Lord.
How about you? Did you have any Sabbath Moments this week?

On Tuesdays I join Jenny at her blog called Just a Minute. She has a meme called Sixty Seconds on Tuesday which you can read more about here. Join her on Tuesdays to preserve a precious moment in word or photo. It is fun to share!
God compares the Soul to Five Things:
God compares the Soul to Five Things:
You are the beautiful rose among thorns.
You are the bee buzzing in the honey.
You are the excellent flying dove.
You are the beautiful sparkling sun.
You are the full moon in the sky.
I can't turn my eyes away from you! - Mechthild of Magdeburg
It took me just 60 seconds to fall in love with this beautiful quote. But I must tell you, I need more than 60 seconds to digest all its meanings.
For now, it is enough to read it and reflect.
Just imagine! God cannot take his eyes away from us.

Favorite Prayer Meme
Mary from The Beautiful Gate tagged me on the Prayer Meme. Thank you, Mary!!
The rules for this meme are:
Name your three favorite prayers and explain why they're your favorites. Then tag five other bloggers- give them a link and let them know they've been tagged. Finally, tell the person who tagged you that you have completed the meme. The Liturgy and the Sacraments are off limits here.
As usual, I am going to break the rules by not tagging anyone. ALL who visit here are welcome to join in. I think this is a fun meme and it really made me think about my favorite prayers and why they are my favorites. So all may join in if you wish! Please let me know if you do!
My three favorite prayers:
1. Prayer of Abandonment, by Thomas Merton. I so often feel like he did when he wrote this prayer! And it reminds me to trust, no matter what.
2. Prayer of Surrender, by St. Ignatius. Gee, I wonder if my choices in prayer are saying something about me!! I obviously need help to surrender and trust.
3. The Jesus Prayer. My spiritual director once told me when I was depressed that this prayer was a great one to pray over and over all day. He told me that some even shorten it to "Jesus." The power in the Name. So I tried it, and it really helped me through a difficult time. I pray it whenever I need it, and even when I don't!
Thomas Merton's Prayer of Abandonment
My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going.
I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end.
Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so.
But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you and I hope that I have that desire in all that I am doing.
And I know that if I do this, you will lead me by the right road although I may know nothing about it.
Therefore will I trust you always though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death, I will not fear, for you are ever with me and you will never leave me to face my perils alone.

St. Ignatius' Prayer of Surrender
Take, O Lord, and receive my entire liberty, my memory, my understanding and my whole will. All that I am and all I possess You have given me: I surrender it all to You to be disposed of according to Your will. Give me only Your love and Your grace; with these I will be rich enough, and will desire nothing more.

The Jesus Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, have mercy on me a sinner.

Guarding Against Greed
Then (Jesus) said to the crowd, “Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of possessions.”
I recently purchased one of those smart-phones. I have wanted one for a long time but could not justify the expense.
But things have changed and it became necessary for me to have one. Or did it? Or did I just want it?
I don't think there is anything wrong with possessions themselves. It is our attachment that becomes the problem.
So I have done a lot of praying and pondering about this. And I had not come up with an answer that eased my mind very much. Until the day I showed one of my sons the apps I have on the phone.
Other than the useful ones like email, phone, calendar and a things-to-do list, most of them were Catholic apps. There is the bible, the rosary, other prayers, the Divine Office, the Roman Catholic calendar of saints, etc. Podcasts were almost all prayer related.
So, could I have done without this fancy phone? Well, I could certainly have done without it, but it has made my life easier. And has helped me with my prayer life believe it or not. I actually have an alarm that reminds me throughout the day to take a moment and just BE with God.
Am I attached? I do not think so right now. But I continually ask the question about this and other possessions.
I pray that my heart is in the right place.
I pray that I know where my treasure is.
For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be. (Matthew 6:21)
Dear Lord, help me to remember to put you first always. To remember that You Alone suffice. To be aware of where my treasure lies. Amen.
