Loving God Back

He said in reply, "You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself." (Luke 10:27)
I have often wondered what it means to love God this way. I long to love God this way. But I know that I fall short. Far short.
To love God with all my being - I have moments like that. Moments when I let go of my fear and lack of trust. Moments when I let down the walls around my heart and let God in.
To love my neighbor - I have moments like that, too. Moments when I actually forget myself and put someone else first.
To love myself - oh, this is really a tough one for me. Which probably is why I have a hard time loving my neighbor.
But I have found that the more I love God, the more I love my neighbor and the more I love myself. And then the more I love God again.
God knows what we need and when we need it. And God never gives up on us. He loves us through everything. And eventually, before we even know what is happening, we find we are able to love Him back.
With all our heart.

Dear Lord, help me to know what it means to love you. Help me to love you with all my heart. Forgive me for those times I fall short in loving you and others. Amen.

A good reflection Colleen. Thank you.

At times it is difficult to love God with all our beings; especially at times when things go wrong and our Faith stumbles.

At times it is difficult to love our neighbour too; especially when he has hurt us time and again.

But this should not stop us trying to love God and neighbour.

God bless you.

P.S. As I may have said before; my neighbour keeps parking his car in front of my house and blocks me in. Love? Through gritted teeth maybe!

Victor, loving neighbor is hard. We need Jesus to help us. Especially our "real" neighbors!! :)

As I gave the children's sermon this morning, I focused on Who is my neighbor but when they read the gospel and I really listened I heard love the Lord words too. I wondered why I focused more on the neighbor side of that story. taking care of our neighbors shows our love for God too. I enjoyed reading your words today. good reflection and gave me some food for thought

Jean, I discovered this through spiritual direction. As I began to love God with all my heart and I began to trust in His love, then the love of neighbor and myself began to grow. God is good!

Colleen:

Years ago I read the following one sentence homily:

"What if God loved you only as much as you loved Him?"

Ever since then I often pray: "Lord teach me to love.

Thanks for this beautiful reminder.
