Humility Makes Us Real

For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted. -Luke 14:11
What does it mean to be humble?
The most humble people I have ever met were people who did not know they were humble. They just lived it.
Humble people acknowledge their talents, accept others' compliments with grace and give God the thanks and the glory.
Humble people know who they are and cooperate with the graces given to them by the Lord.
Humble people know all things come from God.
Humble people do not put themselves down, they raise others up.
Having low self-esteem for much of my life, I never knew how to take a compliment. It has taken me a long time to understand that humility is not about putting ourselves down. It is about acknowledging the gift, and giving God the glory.
I like this quote -
“Pride makes us artificial and humility makes us real” - Thomas Merton
So true.
If we are truly humble, then we are real. We see ourselves for who we are, accept ourselves as we are and accept others as they are as well. There is no need to compare ourselves to other people for we see that it no longer matters.
Because the good news is - we are all invited to the banquet.

Dear Lord, thank you for the gifts you have given me. Help me to use them in your name and give you the glory. Help me to be real. Amen.

I was taught to have the false pride of being embarrassed and rejecting compliments. It took me awhile to learn to point to God for all that is good and worthy in me. It wasn't easy to learn to hear a compliment as praise to God, but when I did, I was happy. It took away all my confusion.

I just finished reading a whole chapter on pride & humility by Thomas Merton. All about being a window for whom all praise only reflects God. I hope I'll attain that someday, but I've got a long, long way to go.

Kathleen, I love that - being a window for whom all praise only reflects God. I have a long way to go too, but I would love to be that window.

"Humble people do not put themselves down, they raise others up." Colleen, I think this hits the nail on the head. Love it. Thank you and God bless you.
