What Are You Looking For?

Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to them, “What are you looking for?” – John 1:38
What are you looking for?
This question reminds me of St. Augustine’s quote – “You have made us for yourself, Lord and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.”
We are constantly looking. We are searching and searching and for most of our lives, I don’t think we know what we are searching for. Or for whom. We just know there is this restlessness within us. This hole in our hearts that we need to fill.
And then one day, in one moment, we find Him. We find the One who has been with us all along. And our search is over. Our restlessness is over.
For the moment.
But it starts again. The search starts again because we are human and because we think we will find peace in this thing or happiness in that path and we forget to put God first.
We forget that we don’t have to go anywhere to find the answer to that question. We don’t have to go anywhere because Jesus is already with us.
And Jesus is the answer.
So … what are you looking for?

Excellent post. This is one of those weeks where the Anglican reading is slightly different from the Roman Catholic reading. (Our gospel reading is verses 43-51). After writing my own reflection on tomorrow's reading (the Anglican one), I have enjoyed pursuing the reflections on today's gospel on various Catholic blogs tonight. It's like having two gospel readings to reflect on! =)

Michelle, how right you are! I went to visit your blog and read your reflection and enjoyed it very much. Thanks! God bless.

Really enjoyed this. Ironically, that phrase stood out when I read the Gospel today. After all, it was the first thing Jesus said to His apostles!

God Bless

Michael, thanks so much! It is a phrase that I pray with a lot. God bless.

I find the questions in the Bible so intriguing and thought provoking. This is certainly one of them. Great thought here today, Colleen!

"What are you looking for?"

At the moment I am looking for my car keys. They are in a set of keys with a special device attached to them. I also have a press button thingy which, when I press the button, it makes the device with the keys bleep so I can find the keys easily. I've also lost the press button thingy so I can't bleep the device attached to my keys. Yesterday I lost my reading glasses ... eventually found them in the fridge. That's cool!

Anyway, you've written a great post here with lots to think about. We're often searching for the wrong things rather than focussing on Heaven above.

God bless.
